Easter Sunday Celebrations in La Laguna

Yesterday, La Laguna commemorated Easter Sunday with the customary rites marking the culmination of Holy Week, following the solemn Easter Vigil held on the previous Saturday night to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord. “During Easter, we honour Christ’s transition from death to life. This is why we exchange greetings of ‘Happy Easter!’ The assurance that Christ, risen from the dead, is alive and present among us fills our hearts with peace and joy, as through His resurrection, we too find renewal,” said the message shared by Bishop Bernardo Álvarez of the Nivariense Diocese for Easter Resurrection, as reported by Nivariense Digital, the Bishopric’s communication platform.
The Easter Sunday festivities commenced at 9:45 a.m. with the procession of the Holy Risen Christ from the parish of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, accompanied by the Venerable Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary, Our Lady of Solitude, the Holy Risen Christ, and their carriers.
Crafted in 2002 from genuine cedar wood by the renowned image maker Manuel Luque Bonillo from Córdoba, the image of the angel and the Roman complete the scene depicting the Resurrection of Christ.

Later in the day, at 12:00 p.m., the Cathedral of La Laguna hosted the solemn Seasonal Mass. Following the service, the bishop imparted the papal blessing, leading a procession with the Blessed Sacrament to the primary parish of La Concepción, accompanied by various local brotherhoods. The bishop then ascended the church tower to bless the gathered faithful.
Thus concluded a Holy Week defined by devotion, emotion, tradition, and sacred art, as processions weaved through the streets of La Laguna. Adverse weather conditions on some days necessitated the alteration of procession routes or the cancellation of certain events, such as the iconic early morning procession.
