La Laguna Makes Progress on Christmas Lighting Inspired by the Canarian Sky

Fran Hernández emphasises that the streets of the municipality will transform into a grand star map filled with light, excitement, and tradition.

The La Laguna Town Council has been working since early August on the installation and planning of the Christmas lights for 2025. This project positions the municipality once again as a benchmark in the Canary Islands, celebrated for the beauty, sustainability, and artistic consideration of its decorations. The Municipal Services department, coordinated by Councillor Fran Hernández, is collaborating with the technical and artistic team to fine-tune the arrangement of the light motifs that will illuminate each street of the municipality this Christmas.

On detailed maps of every town and neighbourhood in La Laguna, the team has organised the distribution and design of the luminous motifs that will fill the upcoming festivities with magic. During various meetings, creative proposals and the projection of the setup have been reviewed, with progressive installation of structures and supports across different areas of the municipality since August. The images reflect a coordinated and meticulous effort, combining technical precision with artistic sensitivity to create a cohesive display that blends Christmas tradition with a poetic interpretation of the starry sky—an emblem of identity and pride for the Islands.

Councillor Fran Hernández remarked, “La Laguna experiences Christmas in a very special way. Behind every light, there are many hours of planning, creativity, and teamwork. We do this with the people of La Laguna in mind, as well as the thousands who visit each year to enjoy a municipality that illuminates with emotion and beauty.”

This year, the project continues to embrace the theme “The Sky of the Canaries”, a tribute to the Law of the Sky and the quality of the Archipelago’s firmament, recognised worldwide for its purity and scientific and cultural value. The lighting transforms La Laguna into a genuine Christmas observatory, where history, science, and fantasy intertwine to offer a unique visual experience.

The lighting is entirely LED, featuring over 3,500 decorative elements and more than six million energy-efficient lamps, complying with the regulations for the protection of the Canary sky and prioritising energy efficiency. “This is sustainable and responsible lighting that proves it is possible to combine beauty with respect for the environment,” emphasised Hernández.

From the towns of the northeast region to the neighbourhoods of the metropolitan area and the hamlets of Anaga, the lighting is conceived as a visual journey that links each area through harmonious and balanced pathways of light. “We want all towns and neighbourhoods to feel part of this Christmas because the magic of La Laguna is built by everyone,” added Hernández.

This edition features new exclusive motifs inspired by astronomy and nature, integrated with traditional elements of the municipal decorative heritage. While classic figures such as canes, candles, and mistletoe will still be present, the entire ensemble will be unified by a harmonious and coherent aesthetic, guiding the eyes of those strolling through the streets with stars, constellations, and reflections of the sky.

The planning of the lighting will continue over the coming weeks, with installation and testing prior to the official switch-on. “The sky of the Canaries will once again be the inspiration guiding our Christmas. A sky that unites us, identifies us, and reminds us that the light we share is also what makes us a community,” concluded Hernández.

Under the sky of the Canaries, La Laguna is once again preparing to shine with a light that not only illuminates its streets but also the hearts of those who traverse them. A municipality that merges tradition, sustainability, and beauty under one sky, reaffirming its status as a Christmas icon in the islands. In La Laguna, each star placed in its streets heralds the approach of Christmas to a city that celebrates with soul, history, and emotion.
