Generations Unite on Beach for Grandparents’ Day in Tenerife
A lively morning at Las Teresitas beach saw older residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife participating in various activities, all part of the Grandparents’ Day celebrations organised by the local council. The event featured dance classes set to hits like “La Macarena” and “Noches de Fantasía,” where dozens of seniors joyfully followed the instructors’ moves, with some grandchildren joining in the fun.
To keep both body and mind active, participants engaged in games such as boules and water aerobics. The initiative is part of the “Santa Cruz Vital” programme aimed at promoting active ageing and combating loneliness among the elderly.
Charín González, the Councillor for Social Policies, highlighted the day as a chance for families to connect, emphasising that the programme offers ongoing activities throughout the year. Nearly fifty seniors attended, many accompanied by their children and grandchildren, contributing to an atmosphere of enjoyment and togetherness.
Among those participating was Ángel de León, who shared how these events have transformed her life after losing her husband. Encouraged by friends to join again, she expressed her happiness in being involved.
María del Pino, another attendee, took delight in meeting new people through the activities. She attributed her independence and happiness to the support of her friends and family, enjoying a fun and engaging experience by the sea.
The event also serves a dual purpose: ensuring that the elderly are monitored for any vulnerabilities while providing resources and community support. Currently, the Santa Cruz Vital programme has 42 groups across the five municipal districts, with new participants joining each month.
Natalia Rangel, one of the facilitators, noted the joy that seniors experience while participating, affirming the importance of keeping them active and involved. Their connections with the monitors are meaningful, fostering friendships and providing mutual support.
María del Carmen Alfonso enjoyed the day alongside her family, successfully convincing her husband to join despite his reluctance. For her, the day was a cherished experience, filled with laughter and dancing.
Her grandson, Eduardo, echoed her sentiments, relishing the joy of spending time with his family in the water. Councillor González recognised the crucial role grandparents play in family dynamics and remarked on the day’s mission to celebrate their contributions while providing them an opportunity to enjoy themselves with their grandchildren.
As the festivities wrapped up, participants left the beach eager for more events, leaving behind a sense of community and connection that enriches their lives.
